Working thesis- How is veganism beneficial to humans compared to the regular meat eating diet or vegetarianism?

Murphy, Lauren and Becca Ziggyfee. “ Veganism Interview.’ Feb 17. 2018

In my interview, I talked to my roommate who is a vegan and got some helpful insight of what it is like being vegan. I was able to see how it personally affects her and her daily life and why she chose it. One of the interesting things about Becca is that she has prior experiences of being a vegetarian and eating meat. This was helpful because I got to see how she felt doing each of those and what she prefers. It was not as extensive of an email as I hoped, but as time goes on before the end when the essay is due I hope to ask more questions as my research gets farther along as well and see her perspectives on what I find. I think that overall my interview with Becca was helpful and that she gave me true honest answers.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Volume 89, Issue 5, 1 May 2009, Pages 1627S–1633S, 2018

This article was a very in depth article of veganism. It delved into the idea of health benefits of veganism and how it affects humans. I learned that people who usually follow a vegan diet tend to be thinner and have lower cholesterol as long as other health benefits. But there is also the downfalls that they have weaker bone structure because vegans can't always get enough calcium in them. There was many other examples of detrimental factors to the human body from vegan diets but also many beneficial ones as well. I can use this source to explain how the diet, like the other two can have its pros and cons and that to do each one must focus on getting all the nutrients that they need. I thought it was really neat to see how being one diet can protect themselves from getting certain cancers or diseases!

Springmann, Marco, et al. “Analysis and Valuation of the Health and Climate Change

Cobenefits of Dietary Change.” Proceedings of the National Academy of

Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, 18 Mar. 2016,

I wanted to research to see how veganism can help the planet at Oxford University did research on how it can help the Earth in the future. It found that plant based diets can help lessen the greenhouse gases- emissions on the earth and climate change. By 2050 there could be 5.1 million less deaths which is quite huge. There was also be an economical change for the better. The governments would not have to spend as much money on health care and lost working days as well. The financial gain would be huge according to the site - estimated in the billions. Overall, this site explained the huge financial success eating a plant based diet has but also more life on earth and longer life expectancy.

“Vegans Save 198 Animals a Year.” Peta.org

This site had information on how many animals are saved in a day by going vegan and how many animals are killed each year from meat eaters. I thought this site would be important because many peoples reasoning for going vegan is because of the efforts to save the animals. According to Peta, each vegan saves roughly 200 animals per year which is quite a lot. And because of this the number of animals eaten per year are going down very quickly. This is good for my site because they are simple rough facts of the estimated animals saved. .
